Plant Wisdom: White Sage

The plant which revealed itself for today's Plant Wisdom blog post is White Sage (Salvia apiana). You may know White Sage as the go to plant for smudging, the ritual of burning dried herbs to cleanse a room or ourselves, removing negative energy.

In life, we are not only prone to 'picking up' energies from our environment and from each other, but also from ourselves, our own thought processes, energies which attach to our aura (or energy layers) and which can sometimes be hard to shake. White Sage is here to clear the path, helping us to move forward.

Common Uses

Smudging is a ritual that has been done for centuries - Native Americans burned White Sage and many other herbs in their healing rituals and many French hospitals used to burn herbs such as rosemary and thyme to cleanse the air of bacteria and prevent contagion.

Spirit Medicine

White Sage grows in dry conditions in the mountains, in clean air and blue skies. And this is the energy White Sage brings to us, the clarity of clear, of light, of new horizons, looking over the hills in our lives to clear a new pathway. I use White Sage, and homegrown common Sage, in many of my sessions - it helps to disconnect from the world outside and lights the path for healing. It brings a sense of peace and connects us to the Divine.
